REPRESENTATIVE TEAM SELECTION POLICY

Version 1.0

Adopted from NSW Netball Selection Policy & Procedures 11/09/2011 and
Nelson Bay Netball Association Representative Guidelines

1. Our Commitment:
 

Nelson Bay Netball Association, hereinafter referred to as the Association, supports an open and fair process for selection of teams. Selection will be based on clear criteria that are communicated with all players prior to the season commencing.

2. Eligibility:
  a)    

Representative Teams will only go ahead if a Coach has been approved and appointed by the Association.  

All coaches must hold a current "NSW Netball Foundation Coaching Course Accreditation" or higher

Coaching Accreditation Certificate. Consideration may also be given to those with proven equivalent

qualifications and/or experience. If no coach has been appointed for a particular age division, no

representative team will proceed for that calendar year.

  b)

The age division of the players shall be determined by their ages as at December 31 in that calendar year.

  c)

 Representative teams may be selected in the 12 years, 13 years, 14 years, 15 years and 17 years and

Open division as deemed appropriate by the Association.

  d)

Where an age qualification applies, players must play in their correct age division. Any request for players to

play in a higher age division for which they are eligible must have the prior approval of the Association and

Netball NSW.

  e)

 There is no minimum age qualification for an Open player, however, where an age qualification applies in

other Association representative teams; players must play in their correct age division. Selectors may

consider a younger player if they have the tactical competence and technical ability to meet the standard

of an Open Team.

  f)

The Association may choose not to enter a team into a State Competition if a team is not deemed to be of

the required tactical competence and technical ability to be competitive at that level. However, attendance

at other local competitions may be considered by the Association.

3.) Selection Criteria, Principals and Procedures:
 

The Association’s expectations are that players are selected on:

  a) Fitness and athletic ability. Physical capabilities including speed, explosive power, agility and aerobic fitness etc.
  b) Technical competence. Core skills including running, agility, timing, pivoting, balance, creating space, passing, catching, leads/drives, accuracy, rebounds, footwork, intercepting, shooting and defence etc.
  c)  Tactical ability. This includes on court decision making, versatility, involvement in the game, execution of plays and competence in selected position etc.
 

Selection criteria will include the following:

  a) Performance at selection trial.
  b) Selectors will have access to Players Performance Reviews as submitted by representative coaches from the previous representative season. Such information will include attendance at training, playing skills, statistics and overall performance.
  c) Observation at competitions (State Age, State Championships, State League), Representative Carnivals and Association Competition.
  d) Training and Association events.
  e) Good sportsmanship.
  f)  Abiding by our Associations Code of Behaviour on and off the field (behaviour).
  In addition, players:
  a) Must be financial members of the club.
  b) Will be selected on their performance, commitment and behaviour; not their personal characteristics or attributes (in accordance with NSW Netball Policies and Netball Australia Policies).
  c) May be precluded from selection if there is a concern about their ability to compete safely or if their participation poses a risk to others.
  d) Any player involved in selection must not wear any article of competition team clothing or representative uniform attire.

4.       Inability to attend selections:

 

No player will be considered for selection unless prior notification of a written explanation has been given to the Representative Liaison Officer detailing special circumstances. Injury/illness is to be supported by a Medical certificate. Notification of your inability to attend must be received prior to the commencement of the trial.

5.       Process:
  a) Players will be advised in writing of the trial dates, location and criteria for team selections on the internet and on the Association noticeboard ten (10) days prior to the selection trial.
  b) If a player absents herself from selection trials in her age division, she may not stand for selection in another age division (i.e. 17 year old chose not to stand for selection in 17 year team, but wants to trial for a position in an Open team).
  c) Players to nominate on NBNA Rep Player Nomination Form.
  d) The Selectors shall view all players in at least 2 of the positions advised on the nomination form.
  e) Closing date for nominations will be the same date for all teams. No late applications will be accepted.
  f) A minimum number of 9 players may be selected and up to a maximum number of 12 players in each team. Team numbers will be determined at selections, depending on player abilities and overall strength of the team.  Up to three cover players (i.e. 1 defence, 1 mid court, 1 shooter) may also be selected if deemed to be of a suitable standard.
  g) Selectors have the option to advise players if they are not required for further selections, and recall players for further evaluation when necessary.
  h) If there are insufficient nominations for any age division, there will be no team for that Representative season.  Players who had nominated may apply for a position in the age division above their own.
  i) Selectors will be appointed by the Representative Sub-Committee and will be responsible for selection decisions. All Selectors will hold a current NSW Netball Coaching Accreditation – Foundation Coaching level or higher – or proven equivalent qualification i.e. equivalent interstate netball accreditations and/or supported selection experience.
  j) There will be at least 3 Selectors in attendance, no parents of players, partners of players or other family members of players are to be involved in the selection process.
  k) Coaches will have the opportunity to comment on the selected players and add any worthwhile comments at the conclusion of the selection process.
  l) Where possible the successful team members will be displayed on the internet within five (5) working days of selections. Official notification in writing should follow by the Association Secretary, including specific information regarding time and date for “Representative Information Meeting”.
  m) Selection criteria will be reiterated during the season so that players are clear about how teams competing in the Championships will be chosen.
  n) Concerns about team selections should be discussed with the Representative Liaison Officer in the first instance.  A formal written complaint to the Association should be made if these concerns cannot be resolved and the player believes she has not been treated in accordance with the selection policy.
6. Replacement Process:
 

If a selected player is unable to continue or is removed as a representative of a State Age/State Championship Team, State League Team or any team representing  the Association, the procedure for a replacement player will be as follows:

  a) The Representative Liaison Officer will be consulted.
  b) The Representative Liaison Officer will consult with the Selectors on the panel for the relevant selection.
  c) The Representative Coach for the relevant team may also be consulted.
  d) Consideration will first be given to the identified reserves/shadows from the selection trials
  e) If necessary, consideration will then be given to other identified players from the selection trials. Players must have been in attendance, or produced documentation as to non-attendance, to be considered.
  f) The Selectors will then fill this position with the player judged the most suitable; possessing the required degree of skill and showed consistent performance.
  g) If a player from the selection trials is unable to fill the vacant position, for whatever reason (i.e. includes players from the trial deemed inadequate to fill the position), then all players registered within the Association in that respective age division must be made aware that a vacancy exists and they must be given the opportunity to trial for that vacant position.
  h)  If the number of players for a team drops below nine (9), the future of the team would be at the discretion of the coach and Selectors.
7.  What we ask you to do:
 

Selection committee

  a) Ensure that players are informed about and understand selection criteria and processes.
  b) Make fair and unbiased decisions based on selection criteria.
 

Players

  a) Make yourself familiar with the selection criteria and clarify any concerns with the Representative Liaison Officer prior to trials.
  b)

Talk with your coach about any concerns and seek feedback about how to improve your performance.
